A US deadline for Israel to improve getting humanitarian aid into Gaza has expired, with the Biden administration assessing that Israel is not blocking aid and so is not violating US law governing foreign military assistance.

Israel rejected on Wednesday accusations made by eight international aid groups, including Oxfam and Save the Children, that Israel had failed to meet U.S. demands to improve the humanitarian situation in Gaza.

There was a fierce internal fight at the State Department about whether Israel implemented most of the U.S. demands, U.S. officials said.

Humanitarian groups say almost none of the US’s demands that Israel improve conditions in Gaza have been met. Donald Trump has chosen the former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee as the next US ambassador to Israel.

The United States on Tuesday said Israel is not currently impeding humanitarian aid for the Gaza Strip and therefore is not violating U.S. law, avoiding restrictions on U.S. military aid.
