Benchmark equity indices rebounded after falling in early trade on Tuesday, with the Sensex breaching the 85,000 mark for the first time ever and the Nifty nearing the 26,000 level, amid sharp rally in Asian markets and buying in blue-chip HDFC Bank.

Sensex crossed 85,000 milestone and recorded a lifetime high of 85,058.55 points while Nifty struck a fresh peak of 25,981.50 points in the initial hours. This was led by buying in blue-chip HDFC Bank.

For the first time, the Sensex has surged past 85,000 points, continuing a record-breaking streak in the Indian stock market, driven by gains in the steel and automotive sectors. Among the top performers in the 30-share Sensex were Tata Steel, JSW Steel, and Powergrid, while Hindustan Unilever, Infosys, and Bajaj Finance were among the laggards.

The BSE Metal index saw a rise of 2%, while oil & gas and power indices each increased by 0.5%. In contrast, the IT index experienced a slight dip of 0.5% The market saw approximately 1,823 shares advancing against 1,259 shares that declined. A total of 122 shares remained unchanged during this period. V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services, highlighted two significant trends impacting the market. He noted ongoing geopolitical concerns in the Middle East and an increase in crude prices, gold, and the volatility index. Despite these factors, he emphasized that "the market remains resilient and the undertone continues to be bullish." Aishvarya Dadheech from Fident Asset Management suggested investors should wait for quarterly results before making decisions based on RBI's rate-cut decisions and the Fed's next moves.

Indian stock market indices, Sensex and Nifty 50, paused on September 24 after a three-day rally to record highs, spurred by the US Fed's 50 basis point rate cut on September 18. Weakness in IT and FMCG stocks weighed on the Nifty, while gains in metal and power stocks provided some support.

Mumbai: India equity benchmarks were trading at an all-time high on Tuesday following positive cues from the Asian and US markets.  At 9:48 a.m., Sensex was up 75 points or 0.09 per cent at 85,004 and Nifty was up 25 points or 0.
