Violent protests erupted on the island last week over the high cost of living, with gunfire injuring at least six police officers and one civilian.

France has sent a group of special anti-riot police that’s been banned for 65 years to the French Caribbean island of Martinique, where protesters have gathered despite the government barring demonstrations in parts of the island.

Martinique, which has a majority-Black population, has been colonized by France since the 17th century. Residents of Martinique pay an estimated 30 to 40% more for food than residents of France. White and French residents of Martinique also hold outsized political and economic power.

France has deployed a special anti-riot police unit to Martinique, sparking controversy. Despite bans on protests due to violent demonstrations over the high cost of living, large peaceful gatherings have continued.
